Changes to Facebook (dlvr.it) Thumbnail Detection

We released the first of two changes to the "Auto-Detected from Item Content" Facebook thumbnail detection algorithm.

Up until this change, the image detection selected the first <img> tag present in the item content and use that for the thumbnail.

This will still be mostly true, however, we will detect the dimensions of the image before using it as a thumbnail. If the image is less than 25 pixels on its shortest side (i.e. if either its height or its width is < 25px) we will skip the image and select the next image. This detection method will be used for each image in succession until it locates one which has a height and width > 25px.

The benefit in this is that we will never select an email chicklet, Feedburner FeedFlare image, etc.

Note: This ONLY effects the behavior of the "Auto-Detected from Item Content" option. "Auto-Detected by Facebook" is still completely controlled by Facebook, and dlvr.it has no control over how the thumbnail is chosen.

The second change, which will be released at a later date, will be the addition of MediaRSS support for thumbnails. If your feed contains <media:thumbnail> tags, dlvr.it will use those before attempting to detect images from the item body.
